Plant is one of the easiest costs to under-price, because the headline hire rate is only part of the picture. Proper plant hire costing works out the cost for the time the item is actually needed, then adds the things that turn a rate into a real cost: fuel, an operator where required, and mobilisation and demobilisation to and from site. On short or awkward jobs those extras can rival the hire itself.
Whether plant is owned or hired changes the sum but not the discipline. Owned plant still carries running, maintenance and depreciation costs that must be recovered; hired plant carries the rate plus transport and any standing time. Utilisation is the hidden lever — plant standing idle on site is money lost, so a good estimate ties plant to the programme rather than assuming it is there for the whole job.
